- Fundamentals of pavement materials and design
- Empirical Methods: AASHTO Design Method
- Knowledge-Based Methods: Pavement Number Method
- Overview of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Method, including calculation of stresses and strains
- Cross-checking design capacity using available methods
- Pavement performance history, including initial assessment data processing and reporting
- Processing, analysis and reporting of materials test data
- Analysis of deflections and backcalculation
- Condition summary and formulation of design assumptions
- Rehabilitation pavement design
During the course, short lectures on the theory of the concepts are given, followed by an assignment relevant to the topic under discussion. The assignments are completed with the Rubicon Toolbox Online software to implement the concepts discussed. The assignments use data from an actual rehabilitation project for a structured and systematic evaluation of rehabilitation data. Most of the course time is spent working on assignments, hence a “hands-on” experience is guaranteed. A working knowledge of essential and more advanced tools in the Rubicon Toolbox software is established. The number of attendees are limited to facilitate discussion and individual attention.
This course is not an introductory course in pavement engineering, although key concepts are presented. The course is suited to participants who have had some exposure to pavement and rehabilitation design and analysis. It is not necessary to have experience in the use of Rubicon Toolbox to participate in the course. For South African attendees, the course is registered with SARF for three CPD credits.

After a brief presentation and demonstration, we will have a Question and Answer session. If you have any burning questions that you would like us to cover, where possible, please email them to us in advance.
The webinar is presented by Dr Arno Hefer and Dr Fenella Johns, with support from Dr Fritz Jooste. Fritz, Arno and Fenella all have extensive experience with backcalculation, analysing deflection data, pavement rehabilitation analysis and design, and using Rubicon Toolbox.
